Canadian retirement financial products
Registered Retirement Income Fund (RRIF) - A government-approved retirement vehicle used most often as a receptacle for funds previously held in an RRSP. Allows for variation in income until the planholder reaches age 90. RRIFs are effective methods offering the receipt of income and the payment of income tax. A RRIF is not a type of investment. It is a plan into which you put investments.Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) – A Registered Retirement Savings Plan is a Canadian retirement savings account that allows individuals to contribute pretax income, which grows tax-free until withdrawal.
• An Individual RRSP is set up by a single person who is both the account holder and the contributor.
• A Spousal RRSP provides benefits for one spouse and a tax benefit for both spouses. A high earner (spousal contributor) may contribute to a Spousal RRSP in their spouse’s name (the account holder). Since retirement income is divided evenly, each spouse can benefit from a lower marginal tax rate.
• A Group RRSP is set up by an employer for employees and is funded with payroll deductions, much like a 401(k) plan in the U.S. It is administered by an investment manager and affords contributors the advantage of immediate tax savings.
• A Pooled RRSP is an option created for small business employees and employers, as well as the self-employed.Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA) - A Canadian savings account that allows individuals aged 18 and older to contribute after-tax income, earn investment income tax free, and take tax-free withdrawals.RRSP, RRIF and TFSA products are not investments. Rather they are “wrapper” accounts in which individuals make investments such as shares, bonds, securities and/or savings.
